How to write a good Precis

Some of the basic principle that we follow in précis writing that are given following.
01 Read through the whole passage carefully, once, twice, or as many times as you feel it necessary to comprehend carefully, its board meaning. Determine the main idea of the passage. Generally speaking, you should read it thrice, but if you do not grasp the sense completely even then, you should read it again.
02 Give a suitable title to your précis, indicating briefly the subject of the passage. It should be as concise and pithy as possible.
Brevity is the soul of wit, and a brief title lends an impressive color to the whole précis.
03 Find the sub headings, read the passage again and again and write down the silent points. If the original passage consists of paragraphs, find a title for each paragraph, and these may serve as sub heading to your main title.
04 Read the original again; the reading will give you a correct impression of the relative importance of the ideas in the original. If it does not, the skeleton plan must be corrected.
05 If the writer of the passage emphasize a certain point, your also acquired to emphasize that point and if has not developed a certain point your are not acquired to developed it.
06 Put the original away and write out the first rough draft of précis.
07 When you are doing précis use the same tense that use in given passage.
08 Finish the clauses when you are doing précis.
09 Do not use the interrogative sentence in précis.
10 Do not use the repeated tense in précis.
11 Change the negative expression into positive expression e.g.
I do not like him.
I dislike him.
12 If idioms came in given passage you should précis this idiom in word. For example
We should admire person who has the courage to calla spade a spade.
Précis: we should appreciate a straight forward person.
13 Remember that on no account should the original be consulted at this stage. In the actual writing of précis, you should entirely depend upon your memory, with the selection plan to help you.
14 Count the words in the original and those in your précis. Your précis should in no case exceed one-third of length of the original. If your précis is longer than the prescribed limits you should decide how many more words you should cut down.
15 Finally, revise the précis carefully to make it read as a continuous whole. It should read smoothly and appear like an original composition.
The important notes related to précis
01Nothing foreign should be introduced into précis.
02 Be particular careful about your language. Most of the people fail to make a good précis because they can not express their ideas in simple and plain style.
